Canelo Alvarez is coming off a close unanimous decision win over Daniel Jacobs in a middleweight championship unification fight on May 4 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Alvarez added Jacobs’ IBF middleweight belt to the WBA and WBC middleweight championships that he won from Gennady Golovkin in their second fight on September 15, 2018.
Jacobs was not able to find the elusive Alvarez for long stretches and while he did come out strong in the second half, landing 131 of 649 punches, Alvarez displayed patience, poise and technique for all 12 rounds. Now Alvarez will go after a world title in a fourth division.
Sergey Kovalev, a three-time light heavyweight champion, had an 11th-round knockout against the previously unbeaten Anthony Yarde to retain the WBO light heavyweight championship in Russia on August 24. This will be Kovalev’s 17th straight world title fight. Yarde had a great showing against him, earning his respect.
The British boxer recovered from a slow start and even landed strong shots in the eighth round but Kovalev’s experience surfaced and he countered in the late rounds before flooring him with a big left handed.
Canelo Alvarez has never fought above super middleweight and he can join Sugar Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns and Mike McCallum as the only fighters in boxing history to win titles at 154 lbs and 175 lbs.
This is what Kovalev had to say about the fight: “Canelo has nothing to lose in this fight. He has a chance to make history. But I have to defend my title. This is the biggest fight of my career. I’ve never been in this situation, where someone is coming from middleweight. I’m not going to make a prediction, but I am going to go in there and defend my title. I think Canelo will be just as strong at light heavyweight. I think he will weigh the same as me, 175 pounds. He will be heavier than usual, but I think he will be comfortable. When you lose weight for a fight, you lose power and stamina, and he won’t have to do that.”
Alvarez explained his mindset and how he feels: “I feel good! This is the weight I’m usually at during my normal life so it’s natural for me. I’ve been eating well, lifting more weights because I normally don’t lift weights when I’m losing weight. I’ve been eating how I normally do, of course staying healthy, but adding more rice, protein and carbohydrates. I’m entering his zone of comfort but we’re ready for this. We have the intelligence and skill to beat Kovalev and win the fight. It’s going to be one of the most important fights for me and my career. This title is very important, to be a four-time world champion in different divisions.”
This can be a really intriguing and entertaining fight, Kovalev has significant advantages in weight, strength, height and reach and Alvarez has to be very careful. I do think that Canelo will find a way to dominate late and get a unanimous decision.
There’s a reason why Kovalev is nicknamed “Krusher.” The Russian has heavy hands and he can let them flu against a smaller opponent like Alvarez. If Kovalev wants to win, he has to try to corner Canelo Alvarez and knock him out. As for Alvarez, he is elusive and he will likely try to stay outside and use counters to get in, hit Kovalev’s body and eventually win by decision.

This will be the 55th fight of Canelo’s career, but the Mexican will enter the contest seven years younger than Kovalev. Kovalev, now at age 36, complied an amateur record of 195-18, only losing three fights as a professional. The Russian has been stopped on two occasions by Andre Ward and Eleider Alvarez. How does Kovalev beat Canelo?
Kovalev will need to utilise all his advantages to be victorious in this fight. Power, size, and most of all, use his jab to its maximum capability throughout the 12 rounds. The Russian also possesses good footwork and is still a very dangerous fighter, even at 36 years of age. Kovalev has knocked out and stopped fighters who are far bigger naturally than Canelo, so it is not inconceivable that he can stop the Mexican in this fight. Kovalev’s jab is almost like a power punch, and consistently utilising this against the naturally smaller man will be the key to victory for the WBO champion.
The 36 year-old is also now under the tutelage of Buddy McGirt, and by analysing his recent fights against Anthony Yarde and Eleider Alvarez, seems more prepared to win fights one round at a time with his boxing skills, rather than trying to blast his opponents out, which is a tactic that should serve him well against Canelo.
How does Canelo beat Kovalev?
Canelo can win this fight by making Kovalev work to his plan. If the Mexican can get inside Kovalev’s jab by using his excellent head movement and stay out of the way of his power, then he can win comfortably. It takes a special kind of fighter to jump up two weight divisions and box a man of Kovalev’s size and stature, but Canelo is a special fighter, currently fighting at the peak of his powers, who is certainly capable of that.

Canelo is a very good counterpuncher, with very few of his opponents wanting to go toe-to-toe with him, and they often actually fight afraid and over cautious.
